The Tool Sprawl

Why every editing tool keeps shipping the same features

Open the changelogs for the six top creator editing tools side by side. CapCut, Submagic, Captions, Descript, OpusClip, Veed.

You will see the same five features shipping in the same order.

Auto-captions with style presets. AI b-roll. AI hook generator. AI long-to-short. AI background music selector.

Different launch posts. Different gradients. Same product.

This is not a coincidence. It is the predictable end state of an industry that confused generation quality with category position. This post is about why that race has stopped mattering, and what is happening next.

The convergence happened in 2024

For about three years, between 2022 and early 2025, the editing tool race was real. Pika was meaningfully better at one thing. Runway was meaningfully better at another. CapCut was meaningfully better at a third.

By late 2024, the underlying generation models had commoditized. Every tool had access to similar quality outputs through API access to the same set of foundation models. Hedra, Runway, Kling, Veo, Sora, ElevenLabs, Suno.

The differentiator stopped being "we generate better" and started being "we wrap the generators better." Which is to say: there was no real differentiator. The wrappers had no defensive moat. They could ship the same feature in a week.

The full argument that generation is commoditizing and the loop is the only moat left lives here.

What the convergence looks like from your phone

If you are a creator, the convergence shows up as a strange feeling: every new tool looks like the last one, but with one more feature.

You try CapCut's new auto-caption animation. Then Submagic ships a near-identical one a month later. Then Captions ships theirs. You realize you cannot tell which tool you were in five minutes ago.

This is the same pattern that happened with photo apps in 2014. Hipstamatic, VSCO, Snapseed, Lightroom Mobile, Instagram filters. By 2016, every photo app had the same eight filters. The category collapsed into Instagram, which won because it was not a photo app, it was a network. The photo features became table stakes.

The same collapse is happening in editing. The features are becoming table stakes. The category is being won by whatever sits one level above the feature layer.

A side-by-side comparison of what each editing tool actually does.

The level above features

The level above features is the loop.

If editing is commodity, then the only thing left to compete on is what the system knows about you, your audience, and your brand. The intelligence layer, not the cut layer.

This is what makes ENCORE different from another editor. We do not compete on cuts. We compete on the Brand Brain, the analytics feedback loop, and the multi-vendor router that picks the best generation model per render. The cuts are downstream of the system. They are not the system.

The deeper take on how analytics-trained recommendation engines beat prompt engineering is here.

What this means for your tool choices

Three implications.

One. Stop evaluating editing tools on feature lists. The feature lists are converging fast. By the time you finish the trial, the other five tools will have shipped the same thing. Pick the tool that has the lowest handoff cost with the rest of your workflow.

Two. If you are using more than two editing tools, you are paying twice for the same outcome. Pick one and stick. The handoff cost between tools is bigger than the feature delta between tools.

Three. The next move in your stack should not be a sixth editor. It should be a system that absorbs the editor entirely into a workflow loop. That is where the actual category is going. Here is what that looks like.

The end state

In 18 months, the editing tools you currently pay for will either be inside a loop system or be commodified down to free.

CapCut has already gone free for most features. Submagic is bundling more into the base tier to retain users. Veed and Descript are pricing aggressively. The race is not toward better editing. The race is toward who absorbs the editing layer into something bigger.

The smart creators are not waiting. They are picking the system that gets stronger with use, instead of the tool that gets cheaper because it has nowhere to go.
